New Draft Pages: Translations in Japanese, Part I

Here is part one of the draft pages for translations in Japanese. It includes translations of six of Nabokov’s major Russian works from A2 through A17, that is, Машенька / Mary to Дар / The Gift.

These draft pages could not have been compiled without the whole-hearted help of Peter Evans. His knowledge of Japanese and aspects of the Japanese publishing market were invaluable. For further information on the Nabokov translations, see Evans’ self-published monograph, A Japanese Bibliography of the Works of Vladimir Nabokov, Tokyo, March, 1985.

Names of translators are given in the Japanese style of surname preceding given name. Many of the transliterations and translations are taken from Evans’ work; the balance are according to the Japanese National Diet Library and Google Translate. Since, as Evans points out, Japanese publication dates can be unreliable, books published on the cusp of a year may actually have been issued in the previous or the following year.
