Czechoslovakia officially dissolved into its constituent states of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic on 1-Jan-1993. In this bibliography, all books published in Czechoslovakia in the Slovak language (language code “sk”) before that date are credited as being “Czechoslovakian” (country code “cs”) editions. Slovak language books published in the Slovak Republic after that date are credited as being “Slovak” (country code “sk”) editions.

Here are parts one and two of the draft pages for translations in Japanese. It includes translations of Nabokov’s English language works from A21 through A35, that is, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight to Pale Fire.

BTW, the term “obi”, used in the paragraphs describing bindings, refers to the wrap-around band over the dust jacket of many Japanese publications. It is usually more explicitly promotional than the dust jacket. It may include a brief description of the book and quotations from reviewers.

Here is part one of the draft pages for translations in Japanese. It includes translations of six of Nabokov’s major Russian works from A2 through A17, that is, Машенька / Mary to Дар / The Gift.

These draft pages could not have been compiled without the whole-hearted help of Peter Evans. His knowledge of Japanese and aspects of the Japanese publishing market were invaluable. For further information on the Nabokov translations, see Evans’ self-published monograph, A Japanese Bibliography of the Works of Vladimir Nabokov, Tokyo, March, 1985.

Names of translators are given in the Japanese style of surname preceding given name. Many of the transliterations and translations are taken from Evans’ work; the balance are according to the Japanese National Diet Library and Google Translate. Since, as Evans points out, Japanese publication dates can be unreliable, books published on the cusp of a year may actually have been issued in the previous or the following year.

I’ve added draft pages for translations in Turkish. The draft pages include 33 editions of 24 translations of 19 A-items from 14 Turkish publishers. The most active publisher is İletişim in Istanbul. It appears to hold the rights to the Turkish translations of most, if not all, Nabokov titles, having been the sole issuer since 1999.

Up for auction at Bonham’s in London on 11 December is a letter of recommendation Nabokov wrote in 1949 in Russian to Sergey Osipovich Yacobson, head of the Slavic department in the Library of Congress. Nabokov was seeking to help his sister-in-law, Sonia Slonim, get a position as a “research analyst”. The auction house’s estimate is $6000–8000, before the 25% premium. It is lot 1039.
